Seated Power Throw training

Prepare for Seated Power Throw as one part of the Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT).

Official Army guidance

Use the current event protocol and local test-control instructions for administration. The reference below describes the event; it is not a substitute for the official directive.

What it tests

Explosive upper-body and trunk power from a constrained seated position.

Test setup

Sit in the prescribed position with the medicine ball and throwing lane prepared by the administrator.

How it is performed

Use a 4.4-pound (2-kilogram) medicine ball. Sit with the legs fully extended and heels behind the restraining line, start with the ball at the chest, pause briefly, then push-throw at approximately 45 degrees without standing.

What counts

Complete two practice throws followed by three record throws. Record the best valid throw to the nearest 10 centimeters.

Result recorded

Record the best valid distance to the nearest 10 centimeters.

Attempts / termination

Keep the legs fully extended and heels behind the restraining line. Start at the chest after a brief pause; a waist lean and wrist follow-through are permitted, but do not stand.

Practice setup

  • Prescribed OPAT equipment and marked test surface
  • Training load appropriate to current readiness
