Body Composition / Standards

2026 Army Body Composition Standards

The current Army Body Composition Program uses WHtR. Review the 0.550 threshold, confirmation process, cadence, spacing, and current implementation status.

Current standard

WHtR < 0.550 meets the standard

< 0.550Meets current Army body-composition standard
0.549Meets standard
0.550Does not meet initial standard

WHtR is not rounded. Digits after the third decimal place are discarded. At the navel (belly button) using the official Army procedure.

EXORD 182-26 Annex A

Maximum Waist by Height

Use the searchable Annex A lookup to find the maximum recorded waist listed for each recorded height under the current <0.550 standard.

Entered as70 in
Recorded height70.0 in
Maximum recorded waist below 0.55038.0 in

0.542 is below the standard. The next half-inch, 38.0 in + 0.5 in, produces a recorded WHtR of 0.550 and does not meet it.

Administration

Initial assessment and confirmation

Initial result

Three recorded waist measurements are averaged after the consistency rule. A result below 0.550 meets the standard.

Same-duty-day confirmation

0.550 or greater requires confirmation by a different measurement team on the same duty day before commander action.

Official records

Measurements are recorded on DA Form 5500 (JUL 2026), with WHtR results entered in ATIS.

Cadence and scope

How the standard is administered

Frequency

At least twice per calendar year. Commanders may require additional assessments.

AFT / CFT spacing

Allow at least seven days between a WHtR assessment and an AFT or CFT assessment unless operational requirements justify a modification under current guidance.

No AFT exemption

A high AFT score does not exempt a Soldier from the WHtR requirement.

Pregnancy and postpartum

Existing pregnancy and postpartum medical exemptions remain in effect.

2026 policy transition

What the current standard replaced

PreviousHeight-and-weight screening tables
CurrentWHtR replaced the height-and-weight screening tables for ABCP assessment.
PreviousLegacy circumference body-fat tape-test workflow and alternate methods
CurrentWHtR is the sole authorized Army body-composition assessment method.

Implementation update

Current implementation status

Current review: The Army is conducting a 180-day assessment of the WHtR policy before further adjustments.

Separation status: As of September 18, 2026, no separation actions for WHtR failure will occur until the Army completes the 180-day assessment and issues further guidance.

Special considerations

Medical and unit context

Pregnancy and postpartum medical exemptions remain in effect.

Regular Army and Active Guard Reserve Soldiers enrolled in ABCP receive a commander-directed medical evaluation. Reserve Component Soldiers may request a medical evaluation at their own expense under current Army guidance.

ABCP enrollment and flagging

A Soldier with a confirmed WHtR of 0.550 or greater is enrolled in the ABCP and receives a non-transferable flag. While flagged, the Soldier cannot PCS but remains eligible to deploy.

Progression and reassessment

Fixed monthly progression requirements have been rescinded. Soldiers remain enrolled until they meet the WHtR standard, and the commander determines when reassessment occurs.
