OPAT / Standards

2026 Occupational Physical Assessment Test (OPAT) Standards

The OPAT uses three passing physical-demand categories: Gold / Moderate, Gray / Significant, and Black / Heavy. To earn a category, all four event results must meet that category’s minimum thresholds.

A result below the Gold minimum in any event is below the minimum qualifying OPAT level.

Category logic

How OPAT Categories Work

Your overall OPAT category is the highest category whose minimum thresholds you meet in all four events. One event below a category threshold prevents you from earning that category, even if the other three results are higher.

Gold

Moderate

All four event minimums required
Gray

Significant

All four event minimums required
Black

Heavy

All four event minimums required

You must meet the minimum in all four events to earn a category. Stronger results in other events do not offset an event that falls below the required threshold.

Occupational lookup

Find your required OPAT category

Your required physical-demand category depends on your published enlisted MOS, officer AOC, or warrant-officer specialty.

Enter an MOS or AOC to see its published OPAT requirement.

Administration & scorecard

Minimum staff

At least two Soldiers are required to administer the OPAT.

Administration team

The administration team includes a grader plus an OIC, NCOIC, or event supervisor.

Scorecard

Record OPAT results on DA Form 7888. The recruiter, OIC, or NCOIC retains the scorecard and enters scores in the Army Recruiting Information Support System.

Score verification

The individual reviews the recorded results after the assessment, and the grader verifies the qualification level.

Retesting

Individuals are granted unlimited re-tests after an appropriate training interval. If later retesting is impractical, the OPAT may be retaken on the same day.

Attire

Army Physical Fitness Uniform (APFU), Army combat uniform, or civilian fitness attire equivalent to the APFU.

Testing aids

Equipment that may provide an unfair testing advantage is not authorized. Ordinary electronic devices such as music players and cell phones are not permitted. Biometric devices such as watches, heart-rate monitors, step counters, and fitness trackers are permitted.
