CFT / Training / Carry

Water Can Carry training

Prepare for Water Can Carry as one part of the continuous Combat Field Test (CFT) sequence.

Official Army guidance

Use the current event protocol and local test-control instructions for administration. The reference below describes the event; it is not a substitute for the official directive.

What it tests

Loaded carrying capacity, grip, trunk control, and movement under fatigue.

Test setup

Use two Army-issued five-gallon water cans filled to capacity, weighing 40 pounds each, and begin at the ready line.

How it is performed

Carry both cans 50 meters by any carry method. You may put the cans down any number of times, but may not drag or throw them. At the endpoint, both cans must be upright before moving to the next event after grader clearance.

What counts

Completion of the marked 50-meter carry with both prescribed cans upright at the endpoint.

Result recorded

Move to the next event after grader clearance.

Attempts / termination

Dragging or throwing a can requires returning to the start and repeating the event. Intentionally removing water terminates the test. An inability to complete the event terminates the CFT and records a failure.

Official guidance is controlling; ArmyFitHub training suggestions are editorial preparation guidance.

ArmyFitHub Training Guidance

Use these practice ideas to build repeatable movement quality. They do not change the Army test standard.

Coaching focus

Practice grip, posture, and short efficient steps under a load that lets you keep moving.

Useful practice

  • Farmer carries
  • Uneven carry variations
  • Short carry-to-run transitions

Progression

Increase distance or load gradually, but keep the trunk tall and the walk controlled.

Test-day transition

Set the shoulders before moving and avoid wasting steps while turning or handing off the cans.

Practice setup

  • Test-appropriate running shoes
  • Event equipment and test surface controlled by the unit
